Welcome to the Belfius Sandcastle Challenge FAQ! We’re excited to have you here and can’t wait to see you and your team build the sandcastle of a lifetime. Here are some frequently asked questions about the event:
BEFORE THE SANDCASTLE CHALLENGE
- What is the Sandcastle Challenge all about?
The Sandcastle Challenge is a traditional family event in Knokke-Heist since 1923, where teams of 10 participants compete to build the sturdiest sandcastle that will resist the rising tide. It’s a chance to make unforgettable memories with your loved ones, filled with laughter, fun, and maybe even a little friendly competition.
- When is the event?
The 101st Belfius Zoute Sandcastle Challenge is on August 4th, 2024. Mark your calendars and get ready for an unforgettable day!
- Where is the event held?
The event is held at the River Woods Beach Club in Knokke, a family club of high standing and open to all. The address is Zeedijk – Het Zoute 832 B, 8300 Knokke-Heist.
- How much does it cost to participate?
It only costs 210€ per team to participate in the 101st Belfius Zoute Sandcastle Challenge. Your team will receive breakfast, a commemorative t-shirt, and a trusty sandcastle-building shovel to use during the event.
- Are there any age restrictions?
There is no minimum age to participate. We have two categories for our sandcastle building competition: one for kids and one for adults. To participate in the kids category, your team must have an average age of under 14 years old.
- Do I need to be an expert at building sandcastles to participate in the Sandcastle Challenge?
Not at all! The Belfius Zoute Sandcastle Challenge is all about having fun and creating memories with your friends and family. Whether you’re a seasoned sandcastle builder or a first-timer, we encourage everyone to participate and give it their best shot.
- Can I transfer my ticket to another person?
Yes you can transfer your ticket to another person. Be advised: This can be done until three days prior to the event.
- Is there a charity component to the event?
Yes, we are proud supporters of the Red Giants, the Belgian national para-hockey team. Through our partnership with them, we aim to raise awareness of their remarkable efforts and the importance of inclusion in sports. Join us in supporting the Red Giants and celebrating their achievements.

THE DAY OF THE CHALLENGE
- What is the address?
The address is Zeedijk – Het Zoute 832 B, 8300 Knokke-Heist.
- What is the schedule for the event?
The schedule is as follows:
- 8:00 am: Welcome and breakfast
- 8:45 am: Team briefing
- 9:00 am: Start of the competition
- 9:30 am: End of the competition
- Around 11:45 am: Competition results, prize ceremony, and entertainment.
- Can I come and watch? Is there an entrance fee?
Of course, you are very welcome to come and encourage the participants! Entrance to the area is free and open from 8:00 am.
- What time do I need to be present?
We advise you to arrive 1,5 hours before your starting time. So you have enough time to park your car, pick up your start number, change clothes if you have to and drop off your bag. 15 minutes before your starting time the start wave opens for your warming-up. You can find your start time/start wave on your e-ticket.
- Can I bring my own sandcastle-building tools?
Absolutely! We provide a shovel for each team member, but feel free to bring your own tools if you have them. Just make sure they’re safe and appropriate for building sandcastles on the beach.
- Will there be food and drinks available during the event?
Yes, there will be food and drinks available for purchase at the River Woods Beach Club.
- Is it possible to change clothes at the event?
Yes, there are separate changing rooms for men and women at the event.
- What happens if it rains on the day of the event?
The Belfius Zoute Sandcastle Challenge will go ahead rain or shine, so make sure to come prepared for any weather conditions. In case of severe weather conditions, we will communicate any changes to the schedule via email and on our website.
- Can I bring my pet to the Belfius Zoute Sandcastle Challenge?
We love furry friends, but unfortunately pets are not allowed on the beach during the event. If you need more info, you can find everything here: https://www.myknokke-heist.be/en/animals-beach.

- I’ve lost something, did you find it?
Found items during our events are handed over at the information point. Did you lose something? Send us an email detailing the lost item(s) as best as you can (incl. serial number is relevant) to the following email address: hello@sportero.be.
